Outcome Data

ETE Program (Outcomes)

  • Discontinued all technology programs within the department, including Welding Engineering Technology and Computer and Electronics.
  • Discontinued all two year associate degree programs in the department including Drafting, Airframe and Powerplant programs.
  • The ETE department modified the teacher education curriculum after implementing the national pre-engineering program (Project Lead the Way) and the development of a Utah Pre-Engineering curriculum initiative from the State department. Some of the changes include:
    • Creating an engineering education component as part of the major.
    • Creating a new course in engineering education (ETE 2660-Principles of Engineering).
    • Modifying two of the courses for the engineering education (ETE 1200 Computer-Aided Design, ETE 2020-Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems).
  • The department has undergone a name change as a result of national trends for a need for engineering education at K-12 level.
  • The ETE department developed a PhD program in Engineering Education through the College of Engineering.
  • One of three engineering education PhD programs in the country
  • One of ten Project Lead the Way affiliate university programs in the country.

National Design Competitions

ETE Students continue to prove that they can compete with the very best from across the nation as they consistently do well in intercollegiate student design competitions.
 
In the 2004 Competitions (National)

  • Runner-Up in the Transportation Contest at the Technology Education College Association (TECA) competition in Albuquerque, NM - International Technology Education Association Conference (March 2004)
  • Runner-Up in the Technology Challenge at the Technology Education College Association (TECA) competition in Albuquerque, NM - International Technology Education Association Conference (March 2004)

In the 2006 competitions:

  • Third Place in the Transportation Contest at the Technology Education College Association (TECA) competition in Albuquerque, NM - International Technology Education Association Conference (March 2006)

In the 2009 competitions:

  • 2nd place in the Technology challenge contest (March 2009)
  • 2nd place in the Communication contest (March 2009)
  • 4th place in the Problem solving contest (March 2009)
  • 5th place in the College Division of the VEX Robotics World championship (May 2009)

Aviation Technology

A comprehensive assessment methodology defined at the university level is applied to the Aviation Professional Pilot and Maintenance Management program that includes Course Evaluations, Graduating Student Surveys, Senior Exit Interviews, Advisory Committees, and Employment Follow-Up.  In addition to these assessment tools, the Aviation Program utilizes the record of success rates for students who take Federal Aviation Administration written tests and practical tests as a means of evaluating teaching efficiency .  The Federal Aviation Administration universally requires a passing grade of seventy percent for all written and practical tests.

Individual pilot licenses and ratings, and Aviation Maintenance Technician certifications all require a written test and a final practical (skill) test.  Applicants who fail any such test on the first attempt are required to review specified material and re-take the test.  Over the period 2002 – 2008 there were no Utah State University aviation students who failed to achieve any license, rating, or certification following a re-test.  The first attempt success rates are as follows:

  • Pilot Written Tests 2002 - 2008 1319 / 1346 = 98% overall success rate.
  • Pilot Practical Tests 2002 - 2008: 615 / 792 = 78% overall success rate.
  • Maintenance Written Tests 2002 - 2008: 83 / 83 = 100% overall success rate.
  • Maintenance Practical Tests 2005 - 2008 38 / 38 = 100% overall success rate.

Additional Assessment

  • Feedback received on specific individuals or concerning particular programs also is retained and utilized to add insight to program assessment.  The Utah State University administration was advised in 2006 by the U.S. Air Force that over the past seven years one hundred percent of Air Force flight applicants from Utah State University have achieved flight positions, and that Utah State University is the sole university to achieve that level of success.  It was also noted that the next highest level achieved by a university was a success rate of less than fifty percent.
  • A new fleet of airplanes added in 2006 has had a noticeable effect on flight students and graduates in terms of their familiarity with modern, technically advanced aircraft systems and their ability to operate them in a flight environment.
  • The effect has been to enable a seamless transition into the flight environment of the professionals, enabling our graduates more, and more immediate opportunities.
  • Sky West Airlines indicates that the majority of the pilots employed by the airline are graduates of the Utah State University Professional Pilot program.
On several occasions during the five year period 2002-2006 the Utah State University administration learned of graduates of the Maintenance Management program having achieved senior- and top-level management positions in major U.S. corporations.
